IN THE STREETS

THE OLD BRIDGE AND THE MILLER'S HOUSE
The 15th century roman " humpbacked bridge" has peculiar pier heads which project into the river, impeding its flow.
The old bridge and the miller's house
Covered with small round stones, it supported coach and horse weights for generations. Coach and horses had to follow the road from Nontron to Thiviers around hills and across the river Cole to access the post office which remained in St jean for a long time.

La rue du fond du bourg   LA RUE DU FOND DU BOURG
Half-timbered houses reconstructed in the 14th century.

a street with perched roofs hanging down,
with aged wood, with golden tiles
it sags so, at the edge of town,
That when passing, one can only admire...

THE RIVER
The river flows between hills, which maybe the origin of its name (in French, "couler" means to flow). Perhaps though, the name comes from the very important convent ("couvent" in French) which was located in the priory.
One of the river's tributaries is the "queue d'ane" (donkey's tail), a small river which flows through the Limousin region. When the Queue d'ane floods, the river does too... just as spectacularly and as suddenly.
The river Cole flows into the Dronne river which feeds into the Isle river.
Its bank are still edged with trees and the river's thousand windings will relax you and remind you how sweet life can be.
The river's bed and banks are home to a variety of life : herons, crayfish, ducks and moor-hens, and fish of all kinds...
Many watermills are landmarks on its stream. Some of them are still operative and produce chestnut oil, flour, or cider.
...and will be glad to welcome you !
